The hill we climb

Parts of Amanda Gorman’s poem, The Hill We Climb, have tugged at me each time I’ve listened to her deliver it. Her words inspired millions as she spoke of what has been and what is possible for the future… a better future.

I thought of people I coach who are all about doing their best, lifting others up, working in harmony, doing what’s possible to make things better. Looking forward, not backward. Allowing mistakes and differences to be growth stimuli, not festering wounds.

And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us,
but what stands before us.

A recent example stands out. Teri is doing something about what she views as ineffective processes in her part of the company. She knows there are better ways to do some things, and they’ll be more valuable when changed and done consistently. She’s already had some wins but knows she’ll meet resistance going forward. She also knows her approach will be more fruitful if she involves others. She’s reached out to colleagues she trusts in different areas with her idea. They’re on board, excited to be part of making a difference that will positively impact the company.

This is beyond Teri’s role, but she’s exhibiting:

There is always light
If you’re brave enough to see it.
If you’re brave enough to be it.
