Tell me more

As you talk with friends and family at gatherings this holiday season, we all know that certain topics are better left untouched. Here is something to try, especially if you want to get off a topic someone is pursuing.

Listen. I mean truly listen to them. You may be able to pick up on something they said that can take the conversation down a different path.

As you listen carefully, notice what someone adds as a sidebar, or mentions as part of a description, or maybe glosses over. Use it as an opportunity to say, “You mentioned… Tell me (us) more about that.”

It can defuse a situation. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to learn something. Or, maybe delve further than you have in the past.

If there is something you remember from years past that someone said or did that stuck with you in a good way, tell them. Tell them what it was and the impact it had. You may be surprised at where that conversation might go.

My wish for you is for the feelings of warmth, love, and laughter to be with you throughout this holiday season. Enjoy your Thanksgiving Day.
