When I’m talking with someone who is conflicted about what to do about a situation, I’ll often ask:
. What if you were to take the high road? What would that look like for you?
. What actions would you take?
. What behaviors would you exhibit?
. What is the potential impact if you do / don’t take the high road?
After hearing these questions, a director I was coaching actually groaned and said I always make her think and do the right thing. “For once, couldn’t I take the low road and lash out and say what I really think?” Then she chuckled and answered her own question, “That would be disastrous.”
Taking the high road may not be your first instinct, but if you make it the one you choose, you’ll be glad you did, in the long run.
