I have been impressed lately with young people working in restaurants, stores, banks and other places. It is evident they want to do a good job. I spoke with two small business leaders, a retail store owner and a restaurant manager. The restaurant manager said they were thrilled with their new server. She is consistently pleasant and eager to do her job well. She added, “We will do what we can to keep her.”
The store owner said it was her first time hiring college students. She “took a risk” and has been very pleased with their friendly, efficient interactions with customers and their commitment each day to do an excellent job. That was my experience with them, too.
The other day I talked with a young woman who is a PT waitress, an EMT and going to school to get more education to be a flying EMT on a helicopter in her city. Wow, what a goal.
A recent interaction with a young banker at a drive-up window impressed me because she was friendly, efficient and tried to anticipate what I needed. I thanked her for being so helpful. She beamed and said, “You’ve made my day.” That made my day.
We all know working with the public can be very challenging. Yet, these young people have chosen to do these roles. Kudos to them. And to their leaders who will coach them to grow in ways that will positively impact their careers for years to come.
