Week Three of Six
Insight:
“Cultivate trust. Be transparent and patient. Start where they are by seeing through their eyes.”
from Develop the Leader Within You by John C. Maxwell
Coaching:
Be honest with people. Tell them what they can expect from the work and from you. And tell them what you will expect from them. Be generous with information and clear about parameters. Patience is key.
Put yourself in their shoes. How might they be viewing this (whatever it is)? What do they need to know? What else might be helpful for them to know? Do you need to adapt your communication so that it resonates better with them? If so, what could you do to adapt? How will you know if you have been successful in seeing it through their eyes?
Action:
This week, look around your workplace, in person and virtually. Pay attention. Listen.
How much trust exists? Where does it need cultivating?
How much transparency exists?
How safe do people feel about their work environment?
Do people get the information they need consistently? How do you know?
What questions aren’t they asking?
How patient are you with your people?
How patient are coworkers with each other?
What if you let them know you truly want to hear what they have to say, to understand their perspective? What might it do for them? What might it do for you?
Keep in mind, cultivating trust takes time and patience. While this is a long game, it starts in the here and now. One step at a time. Your consistency is a trust builder.
See you next week for #4. Have a great week.
