I ordered a chair for my desk last week. I’d sat in it at Office Depot last year and saved the name because it was a good fit. When an email arrived promoting it on sale, I jumped at the opportunity.
A large box arrived at my front door a few days later, heavier than expected. After dragging it into the house and slicing it open, I was surprised to see the chair in pieces. Yikes, I’d never put a chair together before. But, I thought…how hard could it be? I attempted assembly, reviewing the minimal instructions, and quickly realized that wasn’t going to work. So, I did what millions do when they want to put something together. I did a quick search on YouTube and found the perfect brief video of some guy describing how he assembled this same chair in his home office. Yay for people who share their knowledge on YouTube
I was soon stumped. The wheels refused to connect with the base. I tried and tried, then sat back in frustration thinking…Do I ask for help or figure this out?
Some questions came to mind:
-What’s another way I could approach this?
-If I view this differently, what might I notice?
-What could I do differently that might make it easier?
I shifted into a different position on the floor, held the parts at a different angle, and pushed down much harder than I thought would be needed. Bingo!
After scoring this hurdle, the rest was easy. I marveled at the creativity of those who designed this sturdy, high-quality chair, easy for a novice to assemble. I know it will last for years and am proud I put it together myself. It was a great reminder of what a shift in mindset and some extra effort can accomplish!
