I was talking with a leader who has to make some changes that will require shifting the way she interacts with people. It means developing new habits, which will surely be uncomfortable until she adapts to a somewhat different approach, while remaining true to herself.
We all have fears when we’re attempting something new. Her situation reminded me of what was said to someone trying out for a new role. Their nerves were evident.
“I see you’re nervous. Everyone is nervous when they’re doing what you’re doing. Put those nerves in an invisible backpack behind you. Then, either forget about them, or use them to push you forward.”
I like that visual. It can help you with any change you want to make. Charge up that backpack when there’s a rocky road ahead!
