I attended a program a few years ago because I knew the facilitator. He’s quite creative, fun, a deep thinker, and a generous thought provoker. He got us thinking about the reason we’re here on earth, what we believe is important in our lives, and the legacy we’d like to leave behind.
He asked if we had ever walked through a cemetery reading the names, years, and epitaph that described the person buried there. I have many times. He quipped that one of his favorites was, “I told you I was sick.”
Then he gave us an assignment – right then and there – write what we would want on our tombstone. In 5 words or less. That’s all. Just 5 words. Yikes, I had never contemplated this. I thought of my life, my loved ones, my career and volunteer work. This is what came to mind: Helped others achieve their goals.
Bingo! It felt right. What would your 5 words be?
