Liza had to re-build the culture from what her team had experienced with their previous leader. She knew it would take time for them to trust her, but she had an approach she’d used before that had worked well. After learning a little about each person in one-on-one meetings, she introduced to the whole group her Simple Rules. The team was visibly relieved when they discussed these guidelines, gaining insight into Liza’s leadership style and roadmap to succeed together.
Liza describes Simple Rules as basic principles to which all agree and commit when leading and working in complex environments. Using Simple Rules allows for the creativity, innovation, flexibility, and empowerment that is often needed by teams and networks to work effectively and to strengthen culture.
Six Simple Rules (I’m including some of Liza’s brief descriptions for each.)
Foster a culture of leadership and growth.
Encourage innovation, excellence, and leadership by…
Stay mission focused.
Our “why” centers around…
Always assume positive intent.
Assume the best in others, seek clarity…
Acknowledge the collective power of our network
Be consistent and intentional in leveraging our strengths… while acknowledging that building stronger alliances is all of our responsibilities.
Embrace our diversity as a strength.
Commit to an equitable approach to decision making by recognizing and valuing the differences that exist.
Create space for courageous conversations.
Seek multiple and diverse perspectives and be respectful and clear in all communication, especially in times of change.
It’s incredible the difference these Simple Rules are making, especially when team members or Liza say it’s time for a courageous conversation.
Liza gave me permission to share her Simple Rules with you. What might writing your Simple Rules do for you and your team?
